Marcus Ericsson overcomes early damage to win at Nashville

After his car went airborne on the fifth lap, Marcus Ericsson of Sweden mounted a comeback Sunday to win the inaugural Big Machine IndyCar Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, Tenn.

Ericsson's No. 8 Dallara-Honda was damaged after bumping the back of Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais' car, but he led 37 laps and held off New Zealand's Scott Dixon by about 1.5596 seconds.

"It just shows in IndyCar, anything can happen," Ericsson said in a post-race TV interview. "You can never give up. And if you have a good team and a good car, you can still get to victory lane."

Ericsson notched his second victory of the season after previously winning the Detroit Grand Prix. He also finished second at the series' most recent race, on July 4 at Mid-Ohio.

Canadian James Hinchcliffe finished third. Ryan Hunter-Reay and Graham Rahal rounded out the top five.

The race, held on a temporary track in downtown Nashville, included a number of crashes and yellow flags.

Colton Herta, who started from pole position, led 39 laps but hit a wall with five laps to go and finished 19th.
