Fred Payne scored 14 points as Boston College outlasted visiting Hampton 63-52 on Tuesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Payne and Boden Kapke (10 points) were the lone double-digit scorers for the Eagles (3-2), who won despite shooting just 39.3% from the field and 5 of 27 from 3-point range. Luka Toews chipped in with eight points and four assists for BC.

The Pirates (2-4) were even worse at 35% from the floor and 4 of 23 from beyond the arc. Xzavier Long and Daniel Johnson led Hampton with 11 points each, while Michael Eley contributed eight points off the bench.

BC held a 13-9 lead about 6 1/2 minutes into the contest when Donald Hand Jr.’s jumper ignited a 10-0 run by the hosts. Jason Asemota and Marko Radunovic each drained a 3-pointer during the surge before Kapke’s layup made it 23-9.

Meanwhile, Hampton went 5 1/2 minutes without a point.

The Eagles led by as many as 16 points later in the half before settling for a 37-26 lead at the break.

Payne led all scorers with 10 first-half points, although BC had eight different players score in the opening stanza. Both teams shot right around the 48% mark in the first half, but the difference was Hampton’s 11 turnovers to four by the Eagles.

BC held Hampton to just one field goal in the first six minutes of the second half as the Eagles increased their lead to 47-30.

The teams’ collective shooting in the second half was rather ugly.

The Pirates missed 22 of their first 26 shots in the second half. In fact, they did not make two consecutive shots in the second half until less than six minutes remained in the game.

The Eagles, meanwhile, missed 11 of 12 second-half shots at one point, but their defense allowed them to maintain a comfortable advantage.

BC led by as many as 22 points at 58-36 with 6:44 remaining before a late push by Hampton made the final score more respectable.
