The Atlanta Braves placed catcher Drake Baldwin on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a strained right oblique muscle.
The Braves selected fellow catcher Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Gwinnett to take the roster spot of Baldwin.
Baldwin, 25, is batting .303 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs in 48 games this season. He exited Monday’s 12-0 setback at Miami after lining out in the sixth inning.
Braves manager Walt Weiss said Baldwin first felt discomfort during his penultimate at-bat on Monday, though there were no obvious signs of injury.
“(Baldwin) felt a little something, but it wasn’t a big deal, he thought, and then felt a little more after that last at-bat, before I took him out of the game,” Weiss said. “Obliques are obliques, and they’re never fun to deal with, but the tests that they put him through today were not terrible relative to obliques.”
Weiss told reporters after Tuesday’s 8-4 win over the Marlins that Baldwin has a mild, Grade 1 strain after he had an MRI in Atlanta. He didn’t share anything regarding a potential return timeline, but that is the least severe type of strain.
The reigning National League Rookie of the Year, Baldwin hit .274 with 19 homers and 80 RBIs in 124 games in 2025 with Atlanta. He was selected by the Braves in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
Tromp, 31, is batting .169 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 24 games with Gwinnett.
Also on Tuesday, the Braves returned left-hander Dylan Dodd from his rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him from the injured list. They optioned right-hander JR Ritchie to Gwinnett following Monday’s game.
Atlanta also released veteran left-hander Aaron Bummer and recalled righty Victor Mederos from Gwinnett.
Bummer allowed six runs on five walks and three hits in one inning against the Marlins on Monday, including a grand slam to Javier Sanoja and a solo shot to Xavier Edwards.
The 32-year-old was 1-1 with a 7.63 ERA, 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings over 19 relief appearances for Atlanta this season.
“(I felt) like he was turning the corner the last few outings,” Weiss said. “It’s just (that) he’s working through some things, and just the shape of our bullpen, it’s tough to carry him trying to find some things.”
Bummer, who signed a two-year, $13 million contract in 2024, is a career 22-21 with five saves, a 3.94 ERA, 174 walks and 442 strikeouts in 397 innings over 406 regular-season games (two starts).
Mederos, 24, was a combined 1-2 with a 4.81 ERA in 24 1/3 innings over nine games (four starts) for Triple-A Salt Lake (Angels affiliate) and Gwinnett.
He pitched parts of three seasons for Los Angeles (2023-25), going 0-3 with an 8.53 ERA, 21 walks and 22 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings over 12 games (three starts). He was traded on April 3 to the Braves for future considerations/international bonus pool money.
