Edmonton Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid became the second player in NHL history to win the Ted Lindsay Award five times on Sunday.

McDavid joined Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky in winning the award presented annually to “the most outstanding player in the NHL,” as voted by the members of the NHLPA.

“This award, coming from the guys that you play against every single night and battle against every single night, to have them recognize me with an award like this, means so much,” McDavid said.

McDavid, who also received the honor in 2016-17, 2017-18, 2020-21 and 2022-23, led the NHL in scoring with 138 points (48 goals, 90 assists) over 82 games this season.

McDavid, 29, had a 20-game point streak from Dec. 4-Jan. 13, tallying 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists) in that span. He led the Oilers to a second-place finish in the Pacific Division at 41-30-11 (93 points).

He finished ahead of two-time award winner Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning and young San Jose Sharks star Macklin Celebrini.

McDavid also is a finalist this season for the Hart Trophy as the NHL MVP. He has won that award on three occasions.
