Pavin Smith had two hits, including a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, to help lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series on Monday in Phoenix.

Geraldo Perdomo had an RBI double, walked twice and also scored a run for Arizona, which won for the third time in four games.

Ryne Nelson (3-5) picked up his first win since May 24, allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out five. Paul Sewald, despite giving up a solo homer to Donovan Walton with two outs in the ninth, picked up his 18th save in 19 chances.

Mike Trout went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs and Jo Adell doubled, singled and had an RBI for Los Angeles, which lost its second straight game. Rookie Walbert Urena (4-5) permitted four runs, three earned, on seven hits over a career-high seven innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Los Angeles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Trout singled and scored on a two-out double by Adell.

Arizona tied it in the bottom of the first. Perdomo walked with one out and then tagged and advanced to third on a popup by Corbin Carroll into foul territory down the right field line. Second baseman Oswald Peraza made the catch while colliding with right fielder Adell. Perdomo then scored on an infield single by Gabriel Moreno.

The Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after Carroll led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Logan O’Hoppe. One out later, Carroll scored on a single by Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The Angels tied it 2-2 in the fifth on Trout’s 16th home run, a 371-foot line drive to right.

Arizona took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Smith hit his first homer of the season, a towering drive that hit near the top of the right field foul pole. One out later, Ketel Marte singled and came around to score on Perdomo’s double to the wall in left-center to make it 4-2.

The Angels cut it to 4-3 in the ninth on Walton’s 401-foot, two-out homer into the pool area in right-center. Sewald then rebounded to strike out Peraza, ending the game.
