WTA roundup: Emma Navarro knocks off Iga Swiatek at Bad Homburg

Emma Navarro controlled the final set on Wednesday to finish off a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 victory over top-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland to reach the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany.

Navarro won 18 of 23 (78.3%) first-serve points and saved all three break points in the third set to defeat Swiatek, who committed nine double faults over the first two sets. Navarro next faces Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who delivered a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Anna Kalinskaya of Russia.

Ekaterina Alexandrova converted 57.6% (19 of 33) of her second-serve return points while upsetting second-seeded Mirra Andreeva in an all-Russian affair. Andreeva, playing her first match since winning the French Open title, lost seven straight games at one point.

No. 4 Czech Karolina Muchova is the highest-seeded player remaining in the field after knocking off Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1, 6-1, while Denmark’s Clara Tauson dispatched China’s Qinwen Zheng 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Also, China’s Xinyu Wang is through to the semis after No. 3 Elina Svitolina said Wednesday she is withdrawing with a right hip injury.

Lexus Eastbourne Open

Madison Keys converted 91.7% (22 of 24) of her first-serve points while rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in second-round play in England.

Keys won the first eight games of the match while sailing to the victory. The No. 2 seed next faces fellow American No. 7 McCartney Kessler, who beat Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 6-3.

Third-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hungary’s Panna Udvardy. She next faces Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez, who won by walkover when Czech Sara Bejlek withdrew due to an elbow injury.

Caty McNally rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Emiliana Arango of Colombia and Germany’s Tatjana Maris rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Zakharova of Russia. Czech Tereza Valentova outlasted Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 and Croatia’s Petra Marcinko was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Aussie Kimberly Birrell.
