Daniel Susac homered and knocked in three runs Thursday night while Robbie Ray sailed through six effective innings as the visiting San Francisco Giants stopped the San Diego Padres 4-1.
One of several players San Francisco might deal for prospects before the Monday trade deadline, Ray (10-6) checked San Diego on four hits and a run, issuing one walk and striking out six. Three relievers closed it out, with Erik Miller handling the ninth inning for his fourth save.
San Diego starter JP Sears (3-4) permitted three runs on seven hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings while fanning two. The result snapped a five-game winning streak by the Padres, their longest since an eight-gamer in April.
The Giants initiated the scoring in the first inning. A one-out walk to Heliot Ramos and Bryce Eldridge’s single put runners at the corners. Rafael Devers’ deep drive to right-center resulted in a sacrifice fly, although Fernando Tatis Jr. robbed him of a three-run homer with a leaping catch.
Susac cracked his third major league homer — all in the past two days — in the second inning. The rookie catcher launched a first-pitch fastball an estimated 406 feet over the left field wall with Willy Adames aboard after a leadoff single. Susac homered twice on Wednesday during a 16-3 blowout of the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.
The Padres scored their only run in the second on Xander Bogaerts’ two-out single to right-center that cashed in Ty France. However, Ray minimized the damage, inducing a 6-4-3 double play ball off Luis Campusano’s bat before Bogaerts’ hit.
Susac restored a three-run lead in the fifth when he lofted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Devers, who bunted for a single, reached second when Jung Hoo Lee walked and made it to third via a wild pitch.
Devers delivered three hits for San Francisco, which could have done more damage but went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men.
Luis Rengifo managed two of San Diego’s six hits.
