Jake McCarthy went 4-for 5 with two home runs, three RBIs and four runs to help the visiting Colorado Rockies break a four-game losing streak Saturday with an 8-5 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.
McCarthy is only the second player in the live-ball era (since 1920) to fill a box score with at least four runs, four hits, three RBIs, two homers and two stolen bases in one game. Shohei Ohtani achieved the feat against the Marlins on Sept. 19, 2024.
Both of McCarthy’s home runs came on the first pitch of his at-bats, including a leadoff blast on the game’s first pitch against left-hander Matthew Liberatore. Building on a two-run lead in the sixth, McCarthy added a two-run shot in the sixth against right-hander Luis Gastelum.
Having one of his best seasons at age 29, McCarthy has a career-high 13 homers and 67 RBIs.
Home Run Derby champ Jordan Walker broke a 22-game homerless drought, going deep against left-hander Brennan Bernardino with a 432-foot solo blast to left in the eighth, his 23rd of the season and first since July 9.
Left-hander Parker Mushinski (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings, earning his first career victory.
Jordan Romano allowed a run in the ninth but picked up his 10th save in 13 chances.
Ivan Herrera had three hits, including two doubles for the Cardinals, who had won four of their past five. Jose Fermin reached base all five times with two hits and three walks. He also drove in a pair.
St. Louis went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position, stranding 12 after Rockies pitchers issued six walks.
Liberatore (5-9) allowed five runs, nine hits and two walks over five innings.
Cole Carrigg finished with two hits and drove in a pair for the Rockies, who improved to 19-39 on the road and 7-13 in the second half.
Carrigg’s go-ahead double brought home McCarthy and Kyle Karris to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead in the third. Hunter Goodman collected an RBI single to add to the lead.
McCarthy’s two-run homer in the sixth came after No. 9 batter Ezequiel Tovar drew a walk with two outs for a 7-3 Colorado lead.
