Josh Berry will be behind the wheel of the No. 42 Toyota for Legacy Motor Club beginning in 2027.

Legacy announced the signing Tuesday just six days after saying it would part ways with current No. 42 driver John Hunter Nemechek.

“Josh is a proven competitor who has earned everything through hard work and getting his hands dirty,” Legacy co-owner Jimmie Johnson said in a press release. “What stands out about Josh is his ability to manage the big picture behind the wheel — his experience, perspective and wisdom. His career has been built on that foundation, and I know he will have a meaningful impact here. We’re thrilled to have him at Legacy.”

Berry, 35, will embark on his fourth full-time season with his third team. He spent 2024 with Stewart-Haas Racing driving the No. 4 Ford before signing with Wood Brothers Racing, where he’s driven the No. 21 Ford.

Wood Brothers had already confirmed plans to not retain Berry following this season.

Berry, whose lone NASCAR win came at the 2025 Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, has heated up of late. He has an active streak of six consecutive top-10 finishes, including fourth place at Iowa and third at New Hampshire.

When he was a part-time driver in 2023, Berry made two starts for Legacy behind the wheel of the No. 42. He placed 34th at Michigan and 22nd in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona that year.

Lee Petty, Richard Petty and Kyle Petty have all driven the No. 42 car over the years, along with the likes of Kyle Larson and Juan Pablo Montoya. Nemechek was in his third season in the car and has yet to record a win or a playoff appearance in the NASCAR Cup Series.
