Top-seeded Marta Kostyuk is through to the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open even though she has yet to play a point in the Mexican tournament.

The Ukrainian received a first-round bye, and she got a walkover in her scheduled second-round match on Wednesday when Taylor Townsend withdrew due to an illness.

Townsend and partner Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic achieved a career Grand Slam when they won the U.S. Open women’s doubles title on Friday in New York. The pair captured the Wimbledon title in 2024, the Australian Open in 2025, and the French Open earlier this year.

Kostyuk is now scheduled to get her tournament underway against the winner of the Wednesday night match featuring Kayla Day and eighth-seeded Liudmila Samsonova of Russia.

In the day’s other second-round action, second-seeded Iva Jovic, the defending champion, topped Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 7-6 (5), 6-4, and seventh-seeded Magdalena Frech eliminated Caroline Dolehide 6-4, 6-3.

SP Open

Serbia’s Teodora Kostovic became the first player to reach the quarterfinals at Sao Paulo, ousting ninth-seeded Darja Semenistaja of Latvia 6-4, 6-1.

Kostovic, 19, will compete in a WTA Tour-level quarterfinal for the first time after saving five of the six break points she faced.

The rest of the day’s action consisted of the remainder of the rain-delayed first round. Winners included second-seeded Paula Badosa of Spain, third-seeded Solana Sierra of Argentina, fourth-seeded Anna Blinkova of Russia, fifth-seeded Eva Lys of Germany, seventh-seeded Kaitlin Quevedo of Spain and eighth-seeded Alina Charaeva of Armenia.

The Czech Republic’s Dominika Salkova downed sixth-seeded Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain 7-5, 6-1.
