Andre Luiz had a goal and an assist and Calvin Harris also scored in the first half as Sporting Kansas City produced a surprising 2-0 victory over the host Houston Dynamo on Saturday night.
MLS-worst Kansas City (6-17-3, 21 points) defeated a team that has been competing for the top spot in the Western Conference.
Stefan Cleveland made four saves for the shutout, marking the team’s first clean sheet of the season. Kansas City has won two of four matches this month.
Luiz has played in five matches for SKC, producing four goals and one assist. Harris has made goal contributions in back-to-back matches for the first time this season.
Houston (13-9-5, 44 points) was saddled with its second frustrating home result in a row. A week earlier, the Dynamo surrendered a stoppage-time goal in a 2-2 draw with Cincinnati.
Already trailing 2-0, Houston’s Hector Herrera drew a red card in first-half stoppage time, forcing the Dynamo to play a man down for the rest of the match. Herrera was cited for violent conduct.
Luiz’s goal came from the box off an assist from Stephen Afrifa in the 27th minute.
The gap grew to 2-0 on Harris’ goal in the 45th minute on a play set up by Luiz’s work with the ball for an assist.
