LYON rallied to beat Cloud9 3-1 in the lower-bracket final on Saturday and will face Team Liquid on Sunday in the grand final of the League of Legends League Championship Series Summer playoffs.
Team Liquid has gone unscathed in the playoffs with upper-bracket wins over FlyQuest (3-0) and Cloud9 (3-1). LYON opened with a 3-0 win over Shopify Rebellion, then lost a 3-1 decision to Cloud9 and dropped to the lower bracket, where it stayed alive with a 3-1 victory over Shopify Rebellion to earn a rematch with Cloud9 on Saturday.
Team Liquid, meanwhile, awaited the winner for Sunday’s grand final.
The LCS Summer Split is an eight-team event that began July 25 and runs through the grand final. A seven-week round-robin regular season — in which all teams played each other once in a best-of-three match — set the field for the six-team playoffs.
The top two teams in the regular season — LYON and Team Liquid, both 6-1 — advanced to the playoff semifinals, while the third- through sixth-place teams advanced to the quarters. The bottom two teams in the standings were eliminated.
The teams that claim the top three positions in the playoffs will qualify for the $5 million LoL World Championship, scheduled for Oct. 15-Nov. 14. The fourth- and fifth-place teams will receive spots in the $223,000 Demacia Cup Global Invitational, to be held Oct. 3-17 in China.
On Saturday, Cloud9 won in 31 minutes on red in the opening map, then LYON rallied with victories in 37 minutes on red and 38 and 32 minutes, both on blue, to capture the match.
South Korea’s Kang “Saint” Seong-in was named MVP of the match after pacing LYON with a 21-10-17 kill-death-assist ratio. Teammate Kim “Berserker” Min-cheol, also of South Korea, had a 16-6-20 K-D-A.
Cloud9’s Robert “Blaber” Huang of the United States had a 13-11-20 K-D-A, and Lee “Loki” Sang-min of South Korea posted a 14-13-18 K-D-A to be in positive numbers.
