Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game-winning goal as the Carolina Hurricanes extended their winning streak to seven games on a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday.

Ehlers put Carolina ahead 3-2 with a slap shot from the point on a power play at 6:43 of the third period.

Mark Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored, and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists for the Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves and improved to 5-0-0 on the season.

Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo scored for the Jets, who have lost two straight games and three of their last four. Clay Stevenson made 34 saves.

The Jets outshot the Hurricanes 10-8 in the first period. Carolina didn’t register its first shot on goal until the 5:26 mark.

Scheifele put Winnipeg ahead 1-0 at 4:23 of the second period on a backhanded shot. It was also the Jets’ first shot of the period and extended Scheifele’s points streak to five games.

Jankowski tied the game 1-1 at 8:19 when Logan Stankoven set him up for a wrist shot through traffic on the power play.

Iafallo gave the Jets a 2-1 lead at 10:59 when he tipped in a shot by Adam Lowry.

Kotkaniemi knotted the score back up 2-2 at 16:50 when he tipped in Gostisbehere’s shot from the blue line.

Overall, Carolina won 55.2 percent of the faceoffs, and they outpaced Winnipeg in takeaways 6-4. Most importantly, they put a lot more pressure on the net with 37 shots compared to the Jets’ 23 attempts.

The Jets have now lost back-to-back games; they suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. They will travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Carolina is scheduled to face the Calgary Flames on the road on Sunday.
