Bryson DeChambeau: Golfers ‘too good now,’ round of 57 possible

Returning to the site of his LIV-record round of 58 at The Greenbrier Golf Club ignited discussion of just how low Bryson DeChambeau might be able to go in conditions ripe for low scoring.

DeChambeau is one of three golfers to record a round under 60 at the White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., resort where he won the LIV event in 2023 thanks to a closing 58 and another round of 61.

Patrick Reed said Wednesday that the true greens at Greenbrier set the stage for a round in the 50s.

“These greens are so pure that if you’re hitting the ball really well and giving yourself a lot of looks, once that putter gets hot, you have an opportunity,” Reed said. “The par-5s if you’re — with (DeChambeau’s) length over here, you’re getting to both of them with irons in your hand, and yeah, if you run on a heater like that, you get going, especially early, it just gives you all that confidence. No matter where you’re playing, if you start off with a bunch of birdies right off the bat, you just have that confidence to keep (the) pedal down and keep going.

“Obviously Bryson did that, and to be able to go out and shoot what he did, especially in the rain here last year, was something special.”

DeChambeau moved to new equipment prior to the 2023 event and said, in hindsight, it changed his life.

Reed said there’s one part of DeChambeau’s game that keeps rounds of 60 and lower in play.

“Three hundred and sixty (yards) and straight,” Reed said of DeChambeau’s long-driving reputation.

DeChambeau insists he was locked in on winning last year, focused on blocking out the rain and not beating 59. But he’s fully aware of what’s possible now.

“I’m trying to break 50 on my YouTube channel. But I can tell you breaking 58, I’m sure someone is going to do it at one of these times at some point. We’re just too good now,” DeChambeau said.

“There’s going to be a time where everything kind of lines up. David Duval was one of the first, Al Geiberger was the first, Mr. 59, and then David Duval and others have done it since then. It’s starting to get a little easier. It’s like runners breaking I think the four-minute mile; it was one person that broke it, and the next year there were 12 or whatever or something like that. … You’re just starting to see it more and more. I believe there will be a 57 at some point, even a 56 potentially.”
