Neither Rory McIlroy nor No. 1-ranked Brooks Koepka is expected to play in a tournament this week, but McIlroy still will move past Koepka and into the top spot in the world rankings anyway.
Points for the world rankings are accumulated over a two-year stretch and Koepka will end up losing more points this week because he missed time with injuries both in 2018 and late in 2019.
Koepka did finish in a tie for 17th place at the Saudi International last week with a 4-under-par total, but he still did not accumulate enough points to avoid being passed by McIlroy. McIlroy has been No. 1 in the world seven different times but not since September of 2015 when he was supplanted by Australia’s Jason Day. McIlroy won four titles in 2019 and was in contention late at the Farmers Insurance Open last month just outside of San Diego before finishing in a tie for third.
Koepka won three times in 2019, including the PGA Championship.
