Mets’ Jacob deGrom gets clean MRI, will be put on IL

Jacob deGrom

The New York Mets and Jacob deGrom breathed a sigh of relief Monday as the star pitcher’s MRI came back clean.

The Mets announced they plan to put deGrom on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with right side tightness. The move will be retroactive to Monday.

DeGrom, 32, underwent the MRI on Sunday after being pulled from his start earlier in the day against the Arizona Diamondbacks. After warming up for the sixth inning, deGrom departed with what originally was labeled tightness in his right side.

His discomfort was updated to the area of the right side of his lower back. deGrom, who set down the first 12 batters he faced Sunday on just 39 pitches, earned the win.

He was scratched from his scheduled start last week due to a sore right lat.

It’s possible deGrom could miss just one start and return for the May 21-23 series against the Miami Marlins.

deGrom is 3-2 with a major-league-leading 0.68 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 40 innings over six starts this season.
