Mets’ Syndergaard on lawsuit: ‘See you in court’

Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard said he’s ready to face off in court with a New York landlord who is suing him over unpaid rent.

USA Today reported Saturday that Syndergaard had been sued in federal court, with the landlord saying the pitcher has failed to pay on the eight-month lease he signed to rent a $27,000-per-month penthouse in Lower Manhattan. The landlord is seeking at least $250,000 in unpaid rent.

Syndergaard had Tommy John surgery in March and will miss the season, whenever it starts, as MLB remains on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic. And on Saturday night, he took to social media to share his side of the story.

“So let me get this straight,” Syndergaard wrote on Twitter. “I fairly, and in good faith offered to pay 2 months rent (over 50K) to a landlord for a place I was never going to step foot in due to a global pandemic that took a severe toll upon the residents of NYC, gave timely notice to attempt to try and re-rent, while getting (Tommy John surgery) and now living in Florida for rehab, and the landlord tries to extort me for 250K while leaking this story to the media, and I’m the bad guy?

“Yeah, ok. See you in court pal.”

The 27-year-old right-hander was 10-8 with a career-worst 4.28 ERA in 32 starts last season. He pitched a career-high 197 2/3 innings and struck out 202.

The Texas native signed a one-year, $9.7 million contract with the Mets in January to avoid arbitration.
