The Houston Astros reversed Mike Burrows’ recent option to the minor leagues and placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured Monday list with right elbow neuritis.
The move is retroactive to last Tuesday, the day Burrows was sent down and one day after he allowed 10 runs (seven earned) over 4 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals. Houston initially optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land, but the assignment was nullified because of the elbow issue.
A timetable for a return was not indicated.
Burows, 26, has struggled throughout his first season with Houston, going 4-9 with a 5.99 ERA across 18 appearances (17 starts), while surrendering 21 home runs.
The Astros acquired Burrows from the Pittsburgh Pirates during the offseason as part of a three-team trade. The Astros recently moved him to the bullpen.
It is already the Astros’ second roster move since the All-break began. They also optioned right-hander Alimber Santa to Triple-A after the completion of Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers. Santa, 23, went 0-1 with a 1.17 ERA over 10 relief outings.
Houston also transferred the rehab assignment for left-hander Bennett Sousa to the club’s Florida Complex League team. Sousa is on the injured list with elbow inflammation.
