Brent Rooker, Osvaldo Bido help A’s beat Blue Jays

Blue Jays

Brent Rooker hit a home run, Osvaldo Bido allowed two hits in six innings and the visiting Oakland Athletics defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Bido (3-3) allowed one walk with five strikeouts and one hit batter.

Shea Langeliers had four hits for the Athletics, who gained a split of the first two of the three-game series.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extended his hit streak to 22 games with a first-inning single for the Blue Jays. It matches his career best set in 2022.

Toronto, which had just two hits, is 3-2 on a six-game homestand.

Toronto right-hander Yariel Rodriguez (1-5) allowed one run, five hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. He hit one batter with a pitch.

Rooker homered to left with two out in the sixth. Rooker stopped at second when the ball bounced back onto the field. A video review determined that it was Rooker’s 29th homer of the season. Langeliers followed with a single and Ryan Burr replaced Rodiguez and retired four consecutive hitters.

Bido retired 11 of his final 12 batters before Scott Alexander replaced him in the seventh inning.

Alexander hit Spencer Horwitz with a pitch to open Toronto’s seventh but Ernie Clement grounded into a double play.

Lawrence Butler opened the eighth with a single for Oakland against Brendon Little but was erased on a double-play grounder.

Oakland’s Tyler Ferguson pitched a clean bottom of the eighth inning.

Tommy Nance allowed one-out singles to Langeliers and Zack Gelof in the Oakland ninth. Zach Pop replaced him to face pinch hitter Abraham Toro, who bounced into a double play.

Mason Miller pitched around a walk to earn his 17th save of the season with three strikeouts. It was his second appearance since coming off the injured list with a broken left pinky finger.

The Athletics turned two double plays on grounders on Saturday after going eight consecutive games without turning one.

Oakland reinstated outfielder/first baseman Seth Brown from the paternity list on Saturday and optioned infielder Armando Alvarez to Triple-A Las Vegas.
