Dominic Canzone homered and drove in two runs, Bryce Miller tossed six powerful innings and the visiting Seattle Mariners silenced the Detroit Tigers, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Canzone added a single and a run-scoring double. Randy Arozarena supplied two hits while scoring a run and knocking in two more as the Mariners bounced back from two consecutive losses. Jhonny Pereda added two of the Mariners’ 10 hits.

Miller gave up just one hit while walking two and striking out nine. Jose Ferrer, Matt Brash and Gabe Speier each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the two-hit shutout.

Detroit starter Keider Montero gave up four runs and six hits in five innings. Drew Sommers and Ty Madden combined for four shutout innings and six strikeouts.

Colt Keith’s triple and Kevin McGonigle’s double were the only hits the Tigers could muster. Detroit had scored 32 runs during a four-game winning streak prior to getting blanked.

Seattle grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second. Arozarena drew a leadoff walk and scored one out later on Canzone’s double to center.

The Mariners made it 3-0 in the third. Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor had two-out singles before Arozarena slashed a Montero sinker to the opposite field for a double, scoring both runners. Keith led off the bottom of the inning with a triple but was left stranded. Matt Vierling fouled out before Miller struck out Wenceel Perez and Gleyber Torres.

Canzone led off the next inning with a 451-foot blast to straightaway center, giving Seattle a 4-0 advantage. The Tigers had a threat going in the bottom of the fourth as McGonigle and Kerry Carpenter drew walks. Riley Greene then bounced into an inning-ending double play.

McGonigle led off the ninth against Speier with a double. Jahmai Jones reached on a one-out walk but Greene once again bounced into a double play.

The rubber match between the clubs, who faced each other in last season’s playoffs, will be held on Sunday afternoon.
