Pinch hitter Dylan Beavers doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Saturday night.
Samuel Basallo drilled a two-run homer with one out in the eighth inning to pull the Orioles even at 2-2 and Baltimore’s relievers were stout, allowing the Orioles to capture the first two games of the series.
Pete Alonso and Coby Mayo both had two hits for the Orioles, who have won two nights in a row following a four-game losing streak.
Liam Hicks homered for the American League-best Rays, who are 2-7 across their last nine games. Yandy Diaz and Jonny DeLuca both had two hits for Tampa Bay.
Rico Garcia (5-1) was the winning pitcher with one inning of relief. Baltimore starter Brandon Young allowed two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Rays had a would-be go-ahead run nixed in the top of the 10th inning. Richie Palacios was out at the plate on Taylor Walls’ grounder. Tampa Bay didn’t record an out in the bottom of the inning. Bryan Baker (1-2) took the loss.
Tampa Bay struck out only four times but couldn’t come up with many timely hits.
Rays starter Shane McClanahan threw five shutout innings in his second game since coming off the injury list. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five.
Hicks opened the scoring with a second-inning home run. It was his third homer since joining the Rays from the Miami Marlins this summer.
The Rays tacked on their second run in the sixth on Junior Caminero’s two-out single.
Basallo’s 17th homer of the year came off Kevin Kelly.
Reliever Tyler Wells, who was acquired by the Rays from the Orioles at the trade deadline, tossed two shutout innings to keep Baltimore off the board through the seventh inning.
