The Cleveland Guardians recalled highly touted shortstop Angel Genao from Triple-A Columbus prior to Wednesday’s game against the New York Mets.
Genao, Cleveland’s No. 2 prospect, will bat ninth and play third base against the Mets tonight in his major league debut.
Third baseman Gabriel Arias was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Genao, 22, is batting .300 with 13 homers, 20 doubles, 11 steals and 53 RBIs in 96 games between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus this season. The switch-hitter is batting .390 (41-for-105) with five homers and 21 RBIs in 27 games for the Clippers since June 28.
Genao primarily plays shortstop but can also fit in at second base and third. The Guardians have a need at third with Jose Ramirez nursing a sore wrist.
Arias, 26, was DFA’d one day after going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and making a costly throwing error during the second inning of Tuesday’s 6-2 loss to New York.
Instead of the inning being over, the error set up Luis Torrens’ three-run homer for the Mets.
Arias was batting .244 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 42 games this season. Since reaching the majors in 2022, the former top 100 prospect has posted a .219 average with 30 homers and 111 RBIs in 362 games with Cleveland.
