Derek Hill hit a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning Sunday afternoon and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 to avoid a three-game sweep.
Kyle Schwarber hit two homers for the Phillies, belting a three-run blast and a solo shot.
Toronto tied the game at 5 with a three-run eighth and took a 6-5 lead in the 12th. Caleb Kilian (4-0) allowed a leadoff single to Brett Bateman that moved automatic runner Nathan Lukes to third. Lukes scored when pinch hitter Jesus Sanchez grounded into a double play.
J.T. Realmuto opened the home 12th with a bunt single to third against Lazaro Estrada (1-1) as automatic runner Luis Arraez took third. Bryson Stott singled to tie the game. Realmuto took third on Brandon Marsh’s flyout to right. Alec Bohm was walked intentionally and Hill grounded his game-winning single past shortstop.
The Phillies took a 3-0 lead against Jays starter Shane Bieber in the third. Bohm and Justin Crawford started the inning with singles, then Schwarber homered for the first time since July 18 to end a 17-game homerless streak.
Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo retired the first 10 batters and had seven strikeouts before Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cued a double past first base with one out in the fourth. Alejandro Kirk followed with an RBI single off the left field wall.
Toronto scored again in the fifth. Myles Straw singled, took second on Josh Smith’s sacrifice and Straw advanced to third on a wild pitch that walked Davis Schnieder. Bateman sliced a single to left for his first big league RBI.
Schwarber homered 448 feet to the second deck in right in the fifth for his 35th home run of the season.
Philadelphia took a 5-2 lead in the sixth. Stott walked with one out, stole second when Marsh struck out and scored on Bohm’s single to center. Bieber allowed five runs, six hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Luzardo yielded two runs, four hits and one walk while striking out 12 in seven innings.
Toronto tied the game in the eighth against Orion Kerkering. Kirk and Kazuma Okamoto singled with two outs, then Ernie Clement stroked an RBI double to left. Andres Gimenez followed with a two-run, game-tying single to right.
