Mike Clevinger, White Sox shut out Tigers

Mike Clevinger bounced back from his worst outing of the season to throw seven shutout innings, Yoan Moncada homered for the third consecutive game and the visiting Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-0 on Friday.

Clevinger (7-7) limited the Tigers to three hits, no walks and a hit batter while striking out seven. He surrendered eight runs and 12 hits in four innings against the Tigers in Chicago on Sept. 2.

Lane Ramsey and Bryan Shaw each tossed an inning of relief to complete the shutout.

Moncada drove in three runs and Andrew Benintendi knocked in a pair for the White Sox (55-86), who have won two in a row after a five-game skid.

Detroit rookie starter Reese Olson (3-7) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing Luis Robert Jr.’s one-out double. Two batters later, Olson gave up Moncada’s homer before he was removed after 6 2/3 innings and 104 pitches. He walked one and struck out five.

Kerry Carpenter had two of Detroit’s three hits. The Tigers (64-77) swept the White Sox in a three-game series last weekend but have since lost three of four.

Detroit had two baserunners in the second but failed to score. Carpenter led off with a single and was erased when Miguel Cabrera bounced into a double play. Andy Ibanez legged out a double, but Clevinger struck out Parker Meadows.

Clevinger struck out two batters in the fifth and fanned the side in the sixth.

Robert broke up Olson’s no-hit bid with his double to left in the seventh. With two down, Moncada drilled an Olson fastball over the left-center-field wall, his eighth homer of the season.

Chicago extended its lead to 6-0 in the eighth. Yasmani Grandal led off with a single against Tyler Holton and Oscar Colas followed with a double down the right field line. Brendan White replaced Holton and walked Tim Anderson to load the bases. Benintendi then ripped a double to left-center to knock in two runs.

With one out, Eloy Jimenez brought home Anderson with a single. Moncada followed with an RBI single that knocked in Benintendi.
