Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand each singled in a run in the 10th inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Athletics 4-3 on Friday night in West Sacramento, Calif.
Brandon Young tossed seven innings of one-run ball for Baltimore, which won for the third time in its last four games and improved to 18-5 in Young’s starts this season.
Andrew Kittredge (3-3) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and Alex Hoppe allowed a run in the 10th on Zack Gelof’s two-out RBI single before getting Lawrence Butler to ground out for his first career save.
The Athletics pulled within 2-1 on Jonah Heim’s two-out homer in the seventh, and Butler tied the game with an RBI single in the eighth against Rico Garcia.
With two runners on and two outs in the 10th, Baltimore moved ahead when automatic runner Carlos Narvaez scored from second on Mayo’s single against Brady Basso (0-1). Pinch-runner Gunnar Henderson then came home on Encarnacion-Strand’s RBI single.
The Orioles claimed a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Jacob Lopez. With two runners on and two outs, Dylan Beavers singled to right field to score Mayo from second.
Narvaez then hit a slow grounder that Lopez mishandled, allowing Leody Taveras to score.
Scott Blewett replaced Lopez to start the sixth inning and allowed a two-out double to pinch hitter Colton Cowser. After Beavers was intentionally walked, both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Narvaez grounded out.
Lopez gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits on 100 pitches over five innings. He walked three and struck out six.
Heim slugged his 12th homer of the season in the seventh inning against Young, who allowed five hits with one walk and four strikeouts over seven innings.
The Athletics tied the game in the eighth after putting runners on second and third with one out against Garcia, who allowed Butler’s RBI single to left field. Jeff McNeil was thrown out attempting to score on the play.
