Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers and Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians were named Major League Baseball’s Managers of the Year on Tuesday, marking the second consecutive season both skippers have claimed the honor. The rare repeat highlighted a week of postseason award announcements by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA).
Murphy, 66, guided Milwaukee to a franchise-record 97 wins and the National League’s top seed in 2025, earning 27 of 30 first-place votes. The Brewers surged past the Chicago Cubs with a 29-4 stretch in midseason that included a 14-game win streak. Under Murphy, Milwaukee captured back-to-back NL Central titles despite the offseason departure of several key players.
Cincinnati’s Terry Francona (two first-place votes) and Philadelphia’s Rob Thomson (one) were the only other first-place vote-getters in the National League.
Vogt, 41, earned 17 of 30 first-place votes in the American League after steering Cleveland to a second straight AL Central crown. The Guardians overcame a 15 1/2-game deficit to the Detroit Tigers on July 6 — the largest in-season comeback in MLB history — finishing with 88 wins and a 20-7 record in September. The late surge came amid injuries and the loss of key pitchers to administrative leave due to a gambling investigation.
Toronto’s John Schneider (10 first-place votes), Seattle’s Dan Wilson (two) and Alex Cora (one) also received first-place votes.
The consecutive honors placed Murphy and Vogt in rare company. Murphy is the first manager to repeat in the NL since Atlanta’s Bobby Cox in 2004-05, while Vogt is the first AL manager to do so since Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash in 2020-21. Both Murphy and Vogt achieved the feat within their first two seasons as major league managers.
The BBWAA will announce the Cy Young Award winners on Wednesday, followed by the Most Valuable Player honors on Thursday, as MLB’s annual awards week continues.
