Rockies’ Austin Gomber faces Dodgers in search of first 2025 win

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Emmet Sheehan has had success against the Colorado Rockies.

As for Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber against the Dodgers?

Not so much.

Sheehan and Gomber will square off Tuesday night in Denver when their teams meet in the second game of a four-game series that pits the best team in the National League West against the worst in the division.

Sheehan (3-2, 3.86 ERA) made just 13 appearances as a rookie in 2023, two against the Rockies — both wins. The right-hander hasn’t faced them since.

Gomber (0-6, 6.75) will try again for his first win of the season — and his first career victory over Los Angeles. He has pitched against the Dodgers 10 times (nine starts) and is 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA against them.

Sheehan, a right-hander, will try to start another Los Angeles winning streak against the Rockies. The Dodgers entered the series opener Monday having won 10 games in a row against the Rockies, but Colorado rallied twice to pull out a 4-3 win.

The outcome extended the Rockies’ winning streak to four games, matching their longest of 2025, and improved their record since the All-Star break to 14-15.

Gomber, a left-hander, didn’t make his season debut until June 15 due to an injury to his pitching shoulder. His most recent win came on Sept. 5, 2024, in a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves, and he is is 0-8 in his past 14 starts.

Gomber can take inspiration from teammate Brenton Doyle, who scuffled for the first three months this year before turning around his season. Doyle was batting .193 through June but hit .327 in July and is on a .377 clip in August.

A highlight of his season was a two-run walk-off homer to beat Pittsburgh, 17-16, on Aug. 1.

“He’s been good for probably a month now,” Colorado interim manager Warren Schaeffer said of Doyle. “Honestly, it doesn’t surprise me, because you know it’s in there. It just was a matter of time before it came out. He went through some struggles. He learned from them, which will do him service in the future — how to get out of it. I’m happy for him that he’s having success.”

Los Angeles has started to find some success after struggling for much of the second half. The Dodgers were 10-14 after the All-Star break before they swept the San Diego Padres in a weekend series, but their three-game winning streak ended Monday night.

Los Angeles is still in first place in the NL West, a division it has won 11 times in the past 12 seasons. The sweep of the Padres put the Dodgers back in first place after San Diego had briefly taken the lead.

“People who really know this team know that’s still in there,” Los Angeles’ Andy Pages said through an interpreter. “We’re that type of team. Maybe we went through a rough stretch, but the season’s really long.”
