Brett Sullivan and Zac Veen homered, Ryan Feltner recorded his first road victory this season, and the Colorado Rockies held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Wednesday in Phoenix to take the deciding game of a three-game series.
Sullivan hit a three-run homer high off the right field foul pole against Merrill Kelly (8-10) to cap a four-run second and Veen belted a two-run homer in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.
Veen played his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday. He had 24 homers with a 1.037 OPS in 100 games for Albuquerque this season.
Corbin Carroll homered, tripled and scored twice while Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno had two hits and an RBI apiece for the D-backs. Carroll leads the majors with 14 triples.
Carroll’s homer was his 100th in his 606th game. He’s the fastest in MLB history to reach 50+ career triples, 100+ homers and 100+ stolen bases (139). The only other player to achieve the feat in their first 700 games is Willie Mays.
Feltner (5-6) gave up seven hits and two runs in five innings, with two strikeouts and three walks. He had been 0-4 on the road.
Jordan Romano pitched around a two out walk in ninth for his 12th save, his eighth with Colorado. Willi Castro had two hits and a stolen base for the Rockies.
The D-backs (64-58) remain tied with Philadelphia in the NL wild card race.
Kelly gave up six hits and six runs in five innings, with two strikeouts and three walks. He had been 10-3 in his career against the Rockies and had won his last nine decisions with a 1.64 ERA against them.
The D-backs received 10 walks and one scored, but they left 15 runners on base.
Carroll’s homer in the eight closed the deficit to 6-4 and Marte and Tyler Locklear singled before Nolan Arenado grounded into a force out to end the inning.
The D-backs took a 1-0 lead in the first when Carroll tripled and scored on Marte’s single. The D-backs closed to 6-2 in the fifth when Perdomo singled and scored on Moreno’s double.
Arizona scored on four walks to make it 6-3 in the seventh before Ryan Waldschmidt grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Colorado third baseman Kyle Karros was placed on the concussion list after leaving Tuesday’s game after a collision with teammate Ezequiel Tovar.
