Spring training roundup: Blue Jays rally past Red Sox in 9th

Josh Kasevich’s two-run single capped a six-run uprising in the top of the ninth and provided the Toronto Blue Jays with the winning run as they held on to beat the host Boston Red Sox 8-7 on Sunday in spring training action in Fort Myers, Fla.

Devonte Brown (two-run single), Dasan Brown (bases-loaded walk) and Cutter Coffey (RBI single) kicked off the Blue Jays’ big ninth and put them ahead 6-5 before Kasevich’s two-out single to right.

The last runs became important after Max Ferguson hit a two-run single to left for Boston with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Toronto’s Paxton Schultz then got Marcelo Mayer to ground out to end the game.

Ryan Jennings (1-0) pitched the seventh and eighth innings and allowed two hits while fanning two for the Blue Jays. Zachary Fogell (0-1) of Boston was dinged for all six runs in the top of the ninth on three hits and two walks.

Tigers 4, Yankees 0

Dillon Dingler smacked a two-run home run 398 feet, Andy Ibanez and Austin Murr hit RBI doubles and Detroit blanked host New York in Tampa, Fla.

Casey Mize got the start for the Tigers and scattered two hits with three strikeouts over two innings before Tyler Owens (1-0) earned the win with a straightforward third inning.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. manned second base for the Yankees and managed one of their five hits, all singles.

Orioles 7, Phillies 3

Coby Mayo had a two-run single, Vimael Machin hit a solo shot and an RBI single and Jordyn Adams also collected two RBIs as visiting Baltimore defeated Philadelphia in Clearwater, Fla.

Orioles starter Cade Povich (1-0) threw two innings without a hit or a walk before four relievers sewed up the win. Kyle Brnovich tossed four strikeouts over the final two innings for Baltimore.

Gabriel Rincones hit a two-run bomb for the Phillies. Starter Tyler Phillips (0-1) took the loss.

Pirates 5, Twins 1

Pittsburgh broke open a tie game in the seventh inning with consecutive run-scoring singles from Konnor Griffin, Abrahan Gutierrez, Termarr Johnson and Bryce Johnson to beat visiting Minnesota in Bradenton, Fla.

Mitch Keller made his spring debut and scattered three hits over two innings with one strikeout. Tim Mayza (1-0) picked up the win with a spotless seventh.

DaShawn Keirsey Jr. drove in the lone run for the Twins. Travis Adams (0-1) allowed the Pirates’ seventh-inning barrage.

Nationals 11, Mets 6

Washington rang up five runs in the first inning in an easy win over visiting New York’s split squad in Palm Beach, Fla.

Andrew Pinckney hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning and Robert Hassell III went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Nationals. Starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara (1-0) gave up one hit in one inning in his team debut.

Simon Juan had an RBI fielder’s choice before belting a three-run home run in the ninth inning for the Mets. Starter Ty Adcock (0-1) yielded five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Marlins 1, Mets 1

Ryan Ignoffo drove in Ronny Simon on a single in the eighth for Miami to force a tie with host New York in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The Mets’ lone run came on a fourth-inning balk that brought in Brett Baty from third. Baty was the only player to finish with two hits.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara, who missed 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, hit 99 mph and had one strikeout with one hit over one inning. Max Kranick went two innings as the Mets’ starter, with three hits and a strikeout.

Rays 4, Braves 2

Junior Caminero homered and Curtis Mead went 3-for-3 as Tampa Bay beat host Atlanta in North Port, Fla.

Kameron Misner, Josh Lowe and Ben Rortvedt had the Rays’ other RBIs. Starter Joe Rock (1-0) went two innings with one strikeout, one walk and two hits.

The Braves avoided a shutout as Sandy Leon homered in the eighth and Conner Capel added an RBI double in the ninth. Ian Anderson (0-1) yielded one run on three walks and one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Astros 11, Cardinals 6

Thomas Sacco hit a two-run homer and a two-run single in the same inning as visiting Houston batted around in the sixth en route to beating St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.

Patrick Sullivan also went yard as the Astros scored all their runs between the fifth and sixth innings (four and seven, respectively). Reliever AJ Blubaugh (1-0) got the win despite blowing a save in the bottom of the fifth and finishing with three earned runs on three hits and three strikeouts in two innings.

JJ Wetherholt hit a three-run shot off Blubaugh to briefly put the Cardinals ahead 5-4 in the fifth. Ryan Yeager added a homer in the ninth. Reliever Sem Robberse was charged with nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits in two-thirds of an inning.
