Trea Turner’s 2-run homers help Phils past Braves

phillies

Trea Turner hit two homers and Aaron Nola earned his 100th career victory as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 8-6 on Friday to win the opening game of the three-game series.

The Phillies increased their lead to 10 games over the second-place Braves in the National League East.

Turner hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and another two-run shot in the sixth, giving him seven for the year. It was his second multi-homer game this week, matching the two he hit against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.

Nola (10-4) worked six innings and allowed three runs on five hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. It was his 16th career win against the Braves, his most wins against any opponent.

Nola became the 15th active pitcher to reach 100 wins. He did it in 253 games, making him the seventh-fastest to 100 wins among active pitchers.

Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save.

The losing pitcher was Max Fried (7-4). He pitched six innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits — including Turner’s bombs — one walk and four strikeouts.

The Phillies broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning. The first run scored when the Braves could not turn a double play on Bryson Stott’s grounder to shortstop, allowing Johan Rojas to cross the plate. Turner followed with a two-run homer.

Atlanta cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. Ozzie Albies picked up the Braves’ first hit with a one-out single and scored when Austin Riley clubbed a 414-foot blast to center field, his 11th homer of the season.

Turner struck again in the sixth, blasting a two-run shot 459 feet into the stands in left-center field.

Atlanta got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer from Albies, his seventh.

Philadelphia scored three runs thanks to three Atlanta errors in the seventh, but the Braves hung around when Marcell Ozuna hit a three-run homer in the eighth. It was Ozuna’s 22nd homer and his first since June 22.
