There is an outside chance the Columbus Crew could be up against a familiar face when they take on the New England Revolution at home Sunday.

Crew designated player Daniel Gazdag left the club by “mutual parting” on Friday, with reports indicating he is expected to sign with the Revolution. Gazdag might just have enough time to get on the field for his new team this weekend, although the change is not yet official.

The potential quick switch of teams is only possible because the Crew had their originally scheduled Saturday match against the Revolution moved to Sunday. That courtesy was granted after Columbus played in a Leagues Cup match in the Los Angeles area Wednesday night.

The Crew (5-11-5, 20 points) was eliminated from Leagues Cup play following a 2-0 loss to Mexico’s Club America.

Gazdag scored a club-record 59 goals with 31 assists in 125 MLS regular season matches for the Philadelphia Union before he was traded to the Crew on April 11, 2025.

His time in Columbus has been a mixed bag. Gazdag scored just seven goals along with five assists in 43 MLS matches with the Crew and 10 goals and three assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Assuming he lands in New England (10-7-4, 34 points), Gazdag could benefit from the play of Jack Harrison, who has five assists in his first four matches to set the Revolution record for quickest to five assists. He was acquired from England’s Leeds United on July 25.

“It’s funny, we talk a lot about people coming into an environment, and how they can really impact it in a good way,” New England coach Marko Mitrovic said. “Jack has done that, not just obviously with his performance on the field, but with his energy to compete, his energy to train every day, and do additional (work).”

The Crew have lost three straight matches in MLS play and four in a row overall as interim manager Laurent Courtois has tried to assimilate a dozen new players into the lineup over the past five weeks.

“Considering where we are, in terms of building up this roster and integrating new players, it’s been really positive for us,” Courtois said.

“We’re investing in the version of us that could be, hopefully, the next few games, Sunday and in September, so we keep investing in what we want to become and we’re on the right track.”
