Jack Jasinski scored in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time as the San Jose Earthquakes earned a 1-1 tie against Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at Sandy, Utah.
The Earthquakes were close to defeat when Real Salt Lake’s Juan Manuel Sanabria failed to clear the ball with his left foot in front of the net. Jasinski waited for the ball to come down and smashed a right-footed volley that bounced into the left side of the net.
Luc de Fougerolles scored in the second half for Real Salt Lake, his first MLS goal in his second match.
The Earthquakes (13-8-8, 47 points) stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games (3-0-5).
The goal by de Fougerolles came in the 79th minute and looked as if it might hold up. He sent a short right-footed shot inside the far corner.
Real Salt Lake (9-14-9, 33 points) missed out on three points they badly needed in the playoff race. RSL are just 1-10-5 over their past 16 MLS matches.
San Jose goalkeeper Angus Gunn registered six saves. RSL’s Rafael Cabral made one stop.
Gunn thwarted RSL by stopping two headers early in the second half. He saved attempts by Noel Caliskan in the 49th minute and Sergi Solans in the 56th minute.
Six minutes later, RSL’s Kobi Henry caught up to a short pass right in front of the net and sent a left-footed touch over the net.
In the 76th minute, Salt Lake’s Aiden Hezarkhani took a left-footed shot that deflected off San Jose’s Max Floriani, and the ball spun just wide of the right post.
Three minutes later, de Fougerolles was open and Sanabria fed him the ball through the legs of a San Jose defender as Salt Lake jumped on top.
RSL outshot San Jose 22-16 and had an 8-2 edge in shots on target.
In the first half, Saba Lobjanidze took a free kick in the 11th minute and passed the ball ahead to de Fougerolles, who sent an upper-legged right-foot shot that hit the goal post.
Seven minutes later, the Earthquakes’ Beau Leroux broke in and chipped a left-footed shot over Cabral that went wide left.
RSL had a chance in the 43rd minute when Morgan Guilavogui took a right-footed shot that Gunn dove to stop.
