Nationals sign Kyle Schwarber to 1-year deal

Kyle Schwarber

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-year deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the Nationals, however multiple outlets pegged the deal at $10 million.

Schwarber spent six seasons with the Chicago Cubs but was non-tendered last month, making him a free agent. The Cubs selected him with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

He struggled last season, batting .188 with 11 home runs and 24 RBIs in 59 games. He played 551 regular-season games with Chicago, hitting 121 home runs and 279 RBIs.

Schwarber, 27, is best known for a magical 2016 World Series. He came back from injury — he played just two regular-season games in 2016 — to hit .412 in five games. He had three hits in the deciding Game 7, which gave the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908.

He is the second major offseason acquisition for the Nationals, who traded for Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Josh Bell last month.

Bell, 28, was an All-Star in 2019, when he slugged 37 HRs and added 116 RBIs.
