Arizona State edges UMass Lowell on layup in waning seconds

Frankie Collins’ drive to the basket with 2.1 seconds left capped a late surge in Arizona State’s 71-69 win Thursday night over UMass Lowell at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (2-1) made their last eight field goals and over the last 2:05 of the game to outscore the River Hawks 17-4.

UMass Lowell (3-1) was trying to beat its second Power 5 opponent this week after having only one such victory previously in its Division I existence that started in 2013-14.

The River Hawks won at Georgia Tech on Tuesday.

Arizona State outscored UMass Lowell 10-0 in 53 seconds to tie the score at 67 with 1:06 remaining.

The River Hawks turned the ball over three times in that stretch.

Jamiya Neal, who finished with 12 points, made a 3-pointer and scored seven points in that stretch.

Collins’ layup off a turnover capped the run.

UMass Lowell had 21 turnovers in the game that resulted in 27 points for Arizona State.

Jose Perez, who led Arizona State with 20 points, made a driving shot in the lane with 13 seconds left to give the Sun Devils a 69-67.

UMass Lowell’s Yuri Covington made two free throws with nine seconds remaining to tie the score.

Collins made a drive to the basket with 2.1 seconds remaining to put the Sun Devils ahead 71-69.

He then stole the River Hawks’ inbound pass as time expired.

Collins finished 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and eight steals.

Abdo Coulibaly led UMass Lowell with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Ayinde Hikim added 17 points and eight assists (but also had seven turnovers).

UMass Lowell took an 8-5 lead with 16:21 left in the first half on a Coulibaly 3-pointer and did not trail until Perez’s basket with 13 seconds remaining.

The River Hawks built their lead to 22-10 with 6:28 remaining before halftime after scoring eight unanswered points.

Arizona State went nearly five minutes without a made field goal, missing seven straight shots, during that stretch.

A 3-pointer by Kamari Lands cut UMass Lowell’s lead to 58-54 with 5:21 remaining.

The River Hawks responded with seven consecutive points, capped by a 3-pointer from Coulibaly with 2:16 left, to give UMass Lowell a 65-54 lead.
