George Mason coach Tony Skinn lands contract extension

Tony Skinn

George Mason men’s basketball coach Tony Skinn received a contract extension on Thursday that spans through the 2028-29 season.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the school for Skinn, who last season led his alma mater to a 20-12 record in his first campaign at the helm.

“We are committed to Tony and excited about the success our men’s basketball program accomplished on and off the court in his first season as our head coach,” said Marvin Lewis, assistant vice president/director of athletics.

“Tony has displayed the ability to recruit top-tier talent — but more importantly, he has demonstrated he can effectively lead our program. We value his genuine commitment to our student-athletes and are confident that those personal qualities are essential to creating transformational experiences.”

Skinn, 41, spent the 2022-23 season as an assistant coach at Maryland under Kevin Willard, with whom he was an assistant at Seton Hall from 2018-21. Skinn was an assistant at Ohio State for the 2021-22 season.

“I want to thank Dr. (Gregory) Washington and Marvin Lewis for their unwavering support as we continue to build this program,” Skinn said. “George Mason holds a special place in my heart and has shaped so much of who I am today. This is my alma mater, and I have very high expectations for how our players and staff represent our university. We are establishing a standard of excellence that our fans and supporters can be proud of and we can’t wait for November.”

Skinn played in 93 games (68 starts) for the Patriots from 2003-06 and was a key cog in George Mason’s Cinderella run to the Final Four in 2006 under coach Jim Larranaga.
