Having grown from Vegas trip, Baylor prepares for Sacramento St.

All in all, Baylor is feeling good about its recent trip to Las Vegas. The Bears will look to keep those vibes going when they host Sacramento State on Tuesday night in Waco, Texas.

Tounde Yessoufou scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Baylor topped San Diego State 91-81 on Thanksgiving Eve to cap off a 2-1 appearance at the Players Era men’s tournament. Obi Agbim added 18 points with four 3-pointers and Cameron Carr contributed 17 points and six rebounds in the win.

“I think we grew and learned from the Vegas experience,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew. “We really played well against San Diego State … if you take out the last three minutes … offensively and defensively, it might have been our best game, year to date, the first 37 minutes of that game.”

The Bears (5-1) may need to stay sharp, because a tricky road game at Memphis follows the Sacramento State contest. Then it’s four winnable home games before Big 12 play begins at TCU on Jan. 3.

“You want to get better through wins, rather than losses at this time of the year for sure,” Drew said.

The results for Sacramento State this season have closely aligned with their level of opponent, as the Hornets have four wins this season, but three of them have come against Division II teams.

The Hornets (4-5) have been blown out in two games against power-conference opponents (91-67 against Cal and 79-48 vs. UCLA) and most recently dropped a 68-54 decision at Pacific, the first game in a season-long, seven-game road trip.

Sacramento State shot just 21.7% from 3-point range against Pacific, and that shortcoming snowballed into other issues.

“A lot of the time, when we stop making shots, everything else goes,” Sacramento State coach Mike Bibby told the State-Hornet. “It affects our rebounding. It affects our defensive rotations. It affects everybody.

“There’s going to be nights where you don’t shoot the ball well. Every game has to have an effort rebounding and a purpose on defense.”

Mikey Williams had 14 points and six assists for the Hornets against Pacific. Prophet Johnson is averaging 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game and shooting 45.5% from distance on the year.
