Richie Saunders scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds as No. 23 BYU beat No. 10 Iowa State 88-85 in double overtime on Tuesday in Ames, Iowa.
The Cougars’ Dallin Hall finished with 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting, which included 4-for-9 success from beyond the 3-point arc. Egor Demin added 12 points for BYU (22-8, 13-6 Big 12), which won its seventh game in a row.
Joshua Jefferson scored 19 points to lead Iowa State (22-8, 12-7). Milan Momcilovic contributed 18 points, and Curtis Jones chipped in with 16 off the bench as the Cyclones lost for the third time in four games.
BYU outscored Iowa State 9-6 in the final session to secure the victory. A layup from Hall and a jumper from Saunders opened the scoring in the second OT, and the Cyclones never caught up.
Both teams scored 11 points in the first overtime, which ended in a 79-all score.
Jefferson made a layup to put Iowa State on top 79-77 with 34 seconds left in the first OT.
Demin responded with a layup 13 seconds later to tie the score and prompt a second overtime.
The score was even at 68-all at the end of regulation.
Saunders made two free throws to put BYU on top by two points with 17 seconds left.
Jefferson forced overtime as he made a couple of foul shots with nine seconds to go.
Iowa State trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half but went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 56-50 with 7:19 to go.
Momcilovic scored the final six points of the binge. Keshon Gilbert initiated the run with a three-point play on a layup and a free throw with 10:09 remaining.
BYU took a 33-24 lead into halftime.
The Cyclones jumped to a 14-5 advantage in the first 10 minutes. Gilbert made a jump shot to finish the early scoring spree.
BYU rallied to even the score at 17-all with 5:13 to go in the first half on a Hall layup off an assist from Saunders.
