Broncos, buoyed by tight wins, clash with up-and-down Cowboys

A slew of narrow victories has made the Denver Broncos even hungrier for more.

The Broncos will try to keep their winning streak alive when they host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

Denver (5-2) has won four in a row, including a 33-32 comeback victory over the New York Giants last weekend in which the Broncos scored all 33 of their points in the fourth quarter. That followed a two-point win over the New York Jets and a four-point victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton said he and his teammates refuse to feel satisfied.

“It’s like a lion that just got done eating and they’re going to go take a nap,” Sutton said. “You don’t want to be that lion that is eating, and they’re over there under the tree kicking it, minding their business. (Instead) it’s, ‘No, we’re still hunting.’

“You have to have that mindset. I think that’s something this team still has.”

The Cowboys (3-3-1) will try to avoid becoming prey.

Dallas is coming off a 44-22 win against the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys have alternated wins and losses for the past three weeks and will try to push their record above .500 for the first time this season.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will try to build upon an impressive start to the season. He has passed for 1,881 yards (second in the NFL), 16 touchdowns (also second) and just three interceptions.

Prescott’s top target is George Pickens, who has caught 36 passes for 607 yards and six touchdowns. Tight end Jake Ferguson has added 51 catches for 334 yards and six TDs.

On the ground, Javonte Williams paces the Cowboys with 592 rushing yards and six touchdowns. It is turning into a comeback year for Williams, who spent his first four seasons with the Broncos and sustained a significant knee injury during his time there.

Williams said he had total respect for the Broncos and looked forward to visiting his former stadium.

“It was just a good atmosphere,” Williams said. “I loved the team, I loved the staff, the coaches. I had a good time. It probably didn’t go the way I wanted it to go, but I mean, I’m here now.”

Williams believes he is a more complete player in his fifth NFL season.

“Just mentally, I feel like I’m on a different level, just understanding the plays and things like that,” Williams said. “And I feel like that’s what the NFL is. Everybody on the field is talented. Everybody’s fast. So you’re not going to just beat people (with) just pure speed or just talent. You’ve got to actually have a plan.”

The Broncos will look to improve on offense under second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who has passed for 1,556 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. Sutton is the Broncos’ top receiver with 33 catches for 469 yards and three touchdowns, and J.K. Dobbins leads the way on the ground with 523 rushing yards and four scores.

The Denver defense could get a boost this week if linebacker Jonah Elliss (shoulder) is able to return. Elliss, who missed the past two games, was back in practice as a limited participant on Wednesday.

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs remained in concussion protocol as of Wednesday. Safety Donovan Wilson (elbow/shoulder) also missed the week’s first practice.

Denver is 3-0 at home this season. Dallas is 1-3 on the road.
