Nic Dowd scored the decisive goal in the shootout and also tallied in regulation as the visiting Washington Capitals overcame Patrick Kane’s history-making point and two late goals by Alex DeBrincat to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Thursday.

Kane assisted on Ben Chiarot’s second-period goal to surpass Mike Modano’s record of 1,374 career points, the most by a U.S.-born player. Kane tied Modano, who held the record since 2007, during a defeat to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Dylan Strome logged a goal and an assist for Washington. Declan Chisholm also scored, and Jakob Chychrun assisted on all three regulation goals.

Charlie Lindgren made 18 saves for the Capitals, who had lost six of their previous seven games (1-5-1).

Trailing 3-1 late in the third period, the Red Wings pulled goalie John Gibson for an extra skater and forced overtime. DeBrincat scored with 1:40 remaining off a rebound. Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp had the assists.

DeBrincat then tied it with 53 seconds remaining on a lucky bounce. He fired the puck from the center ice into the Washington zone. It took a crazy ricochet off the boards and found its way behind Lindgren.

Gibson finished with 20 saves, and DeBrincat wound up with three points.

Dowd opened the scoring at 6:27 of the first period. He fired a shot from the top of the left circle off a feed from Connor McMichael.

Chiarot tied the contest at 9:52 of the second period. Kane passed the puck to DeBrincat in the left circle. DeBrincat flipped it back to Chiarot, who blasted a shot from the point past Lindgren.

At 6:12 of the third period, Chiarot was whistled for a delay-of-game penalty. Washington was unable to capitalize on the power play, but Strome soon put his team in front on a wraparound goal at 9:36 of the period.

The Red Wings challenged, claiming goalie interference, but it was disallowed. Detroit also killed off the subsequent penalty.

Chisholm scored his first goal of the season with 5:16 remaining, redirecting a Chychrun shot for a 3-1 lead. Strome had the second assist.
