Commanders release former first-round pick Jamin Davis

Jamin Davis

The Washington Commanders on Tuesday cut former first-round pick Jamin Davis, who had moved from linebacker to defensive end this season under first-year coach Dan Quinn.

The Commanders also released safety Sheldrick Redwine from the practice squad and signed safety Ben Nikkel and wide receiver Michael Strachan from the practice squad to the active roster.

The NFL suspended Kevon Seymour, a cornerback on the practice squad, for six games without pay for violating the performance-enhancing substances policy, the league announced on Tuesday. He will be eligible for reinstatement on Dec. 2, after Washington plays the Tennessee Titans in Week 13.

Davis, 25, played in five of the team’s seven games this season as a reserve and made 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss. He had played on 86 defensive snaps (30 percent) and 15 special teams snaps (11 percent).

Washington selected Davis 19th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Kentucky. Davis played middle linebacker as a rookie in 2021 before moving to outside linebacker for head coach Ron Rivera. Davis totaled 282 tackles, seven sacks, 21 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, one interception and two fumble recoveries in 50 games (36 starts).

The Commanders opened a spot on the 53-man active roster. Rookie linebacker Jordan Magee (knee), who has missed the start of the season, has his 21-day window to come off injured reserve close on Wednesday.

Seymour, 30, has played in two games in his first season with the Commanders. He has career totals of 84 tackles, one sack and eight passes defensed in 66 games (seven starts) for the Buffalo Bills (2016), Carolina Panthers (2017), Philadelphia Eagles (2020), Baltimore Ravens (2021-23) and Commanders.

Buffalo picked him in the sixth round of the 2016 draft out of Southern California.
