Carolina Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal signed a one-year contract worth up to $10 million.

The deal announced late Tuesday is for the 2027-28 season. It has a base salary of $900,000, a signing bonus of $4 million and up to $5.1 million in additional performance bonuses.

Staal, 38, is entering the final season of a four-year, $11.6 million contract. The forward was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the upcoming season.

Staal totaled 36 points (20 goals, 16 assists) in 75 regular-season games last season. He added 12 points (eight goals, four assists) in 19 playoff games, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as postseason MVP while helping the Hurricanes capture their second Stanley Cup championship.

“Jordan is not only our captain, he’s the bedrock of the culture we’ve established in this organization,” said general manager Eric Tulsky. “His leadership and on-ice performance throughout last season and especially in the playoffs was a primary factor in bringing the Stanley Cup back to Raleigh.”

Staal has 747 points (318 goals, 429 assists) in 1,403 career games with the Pittsburgh Penguins (2006-12) and Hurricanes. He was selected by the Penguins with the second overall pick of the 2006 NHL Draft.
