Jannik Sinner pulled out of the U.S. Open mixed doubles competition, which opens Tuesday, because of an illness.

The World No. 1, Sinner retired in the final of the Cincinnati Open on Monday against Carlos Alcaraz after just five games due to not feeling well.

Sinner was set to play with Katerina Siniakova, the No. 2 women’s doubles player in the world. The duo’s opening match was scheduled for Tuesday against Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and Alexander Zverev of Germany.

Siniakova, a Czech, remains entered in the field with the identity of her new partner still unknown as of 10 a.m. Eastern time.

The U.S. Open mixed-doubles tournament is being played under a different format this year, with top singles players being paired and doubles specialists largely left out. Siniakova is an exception, having won 11 Grand Slam doubles titles.

The matches in the tournament also will feature shorter sets — four games to win instead of six — until the final round.

The event will be played over two days, with the winner crowned Wednesday, giving singles players time to reset before singles play begins Sunday.

The total purse of the two-day event is $2.35 million, with $1 million to the winning duo.
