Kelsey Mitchell scores 33 as Fever pull away from Tempo late

Kelsey Mitchell scored 33 points and made seven 3-pointers Friday night as the visiting Indiana Fever defeated the Toronto Tempo 103-85.

Caitlin Clark added 28 points and 14 assists and went 12-for-12 from the free-throw line for the Fever (27-14), who finished the game on a 20-7 run to win their third game in a row.

Laura Juskaite scored 22 points for the Tempo (11-30), who have lost five in a row. Kiki Rice contributed 18 points while Isabelle Harrison and Temi Fagbenle each added 16 points for Toronto.

The Fever took a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. The teams stayed close with the Fever taking a seven-point lead on Aliyah Boston’s cutting layup with 6:09 to play in the fourth quarter. Indiana took over when Clark added the next four points to nudge the advantage to 11 points. The Tempo rallied to within seven on Juskaite’s layup with 4:07 to play. Mitchell’s 3-pointer restored Indiana’s double-digit lead.

Indiana led 25-19 after the first quarter.

The lead reached 10 on Mitchell’s 3-pointer with 7:56 to play in the second quarter. The Tempo chipped away to trim the margin to five points before a Fever run, capped by another Mitchell 3-pointer, boosted the margin back to 15 with 3:53 remaining. The Fever led 53-50 at halftime after being ahead by as many as 16 points in the second quarter.

The Fever shot 64.5% (20-for-31) from the field in the first half while Toronto shot 44.4% (16-for-36).

Toronto carried the momentum into the third quarter and took a two-point lead with 8:14 to go on Juskaite’s turnaround fadeaway jumper. Indiana came back to take a three-point lead before Rice made five straight points to give Toronto a two-point lead with 3:47 to play in the third quarter. Indiana rallied to take a 79-73 lead when Myisha Hines-Allen scored on a putback to complete the third-quarter scoring.
