Logan Thompson shines in hometown as Capitals handle Calgary

Logan Thompson

Logan Thompson made 32 saves in his hometown one day after signing a contract extension with Washington, helping the Capitals beat the host Calgary Flames 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas all scored for Washington, which rebounded from its first regulation loss of 2025 and improved to 10-1-3 in its last 14 games.

Thompson notched his sixth straight win as the Capitals reached 73 points to match the Winnipeg Jets for the most in the NHL. The 27-year-old signed a six-year extension worth $35.1 million on Monday.

Washington star Alexander Ovechkin, who is 20 goals short of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 career markers, was held off the scoresheet.

Blake Coleman provided the lone goal for the Flames, who have lost two consecutive games but are clinging to the Western Conference’s second wild-card position. Dustin Wolf stopped 20 shots.

Dubois opened the scoring on the Capitals’ first shot on goal 1:51 into the game. He intercepted a clearing attempt at the top and quickly converted for his fourth goal in a five-game stretch. The center matched his total of 40 points netted throughout all of last season with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Flames generated more chances than the visitors and were rewarded at 12:17 of the second period when Coleman deflected Tyson Barrie’s point shot for a power-play goal.

However, Strome restored Washington’s lead three minutes later during a five-on-three advantage. Strome was left alone at the crease while the Flames concentrated on taking away Ovechkin’s opportunities, and Strome took all the time he needed before picking his spot.

Protas extended Washington’s lead at 17:35 of the third period by converting a on breakaway, which extended his point-scoring streak to five games (three goals, three assists).

The Flames failed on three power-play opportunities in the third period and finished 1-for-5 on the man advantage.
