The Washington Mystics aim to halt their recent woes away from home on Wednesday when they continue their three-game road trip against the slumping Connecticut Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
The Mystics (5-7, 2-3 Commissioner’s Cup) fell for the fourth time in their last five games away from the nation’s capital on Sunday with an 86-64 setback to the New York Liberty.
Michaela Onyenwere scored 17 points in her third straight game for Washington. She is 18-for-32 from the floor during that stretch, including 6-for-9 from 3-point range.
Shakira Austin, however, was limited to just eight points in that game, marking the second time in four games that she has been limited to single digits. Don’t expect the WNBA’s Comeback Player of the Year to be held down for long, coach Sydney Johnson said.
“Kira has really high standards for herself,” Johnson told Monumental Sports Network of Austin, who averages 14.5 points per game. “It’s our job to meet those and push her beyond it.”
Sonia Citron averages a team-best 16.6 points per game for the Mystics, while Kiki Iriafen contributes 14.6 to go along with a club-best 8.9 rebounds per game.
The Sun (2-13, 0-5) find themselves mired in their second five-game losing streak of the season after dropping an 85-75 decision to the Indiana Fever on Saturday.
“It’s just about closing. Until we get to that point, we’re just going to have to keep pushing and pushing,” Sun forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa told the Stamford Advocate last week.
“But for us, right now, it’s about closing and being able to finish out these games that we worked so hard the rest of the game to either be ahead, be right there; we just have to figure out how to put it all together.”
Nelson-Ododa then led the club with 12 points and seven rebounds versus the Fever. Among healthy players, Aneesah Morrow paces Connecticut with 12.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
The teams split their four-game season series in 2025.
