NHL roundup: Knights extinguish Oilers’ 16-game win streak

golden knights, oilers

Chandler Stephenson scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and also had an assist as the Vegas Golden Knights snapped the Edmonton Oilers’ 16-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Connor McDavid scored a short-handed goal for Edmonton, which was denied a chance to tie the NHL-record, 17-game winning streak produced by the Mario Lemieux-led Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992-93.

The Oilers’ run wound up tied with a 16-game stretch by the 2016-17 Columbus Blue Jackets. Edmonton took its first loss since Dec. 19, when it fell 3-1 on the road against the New York Islanders.

Vegas’ Adin Hill made 30 saves for his third straight win since missing 15 games with a lower-body injury. Nicolas Roy and William Karlsson also scored for the Golden Knights, who improved to 6-1-1 over their past eight games.

Stars 2, Sabres 1

Jake Oettinger made a career-high 47 saves and Sam Steel scored the go-ahead goal at 9:04 of the second period, lifting visiting Dallas to a victory over Buffalo.

The 47 saves were the most in a regular-season game for Oettinger, whose personal-best save total was 64, set during Dallas’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames in Game 7 of a Western Conference first-round playoff series on May 15, 2022.

Matt Duchene scored a power-play goal early in the first period for the Stars, who won their fourth consecutive contest. Tage Thompson scored a power-play goal in the second period for the Sabres, who have lost three of their past five games.

Flyers 2, Panthers 1

Noah Cates scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as Philadelphia snapped its season-worst, five-game losing streak with a victory over Florida in Sunrise, Fla.

Travis Konecny, fresh off his second All-Star appearance, also scored for the Flyers. Samuel Ersson made 20 saves for the win.

Carter Verhaeghe scored for the Panthers, who had their four-game winning streak broken. Anthony Stolarz stopped 23 shots.

Flames 4, Bruins 1

Two goals in the first period and two more in the third propelled Calgary to a win at Boston.

Jonathan Huberdeau (goal, two assists) and Nazem Kadri (three assists) paced the Flames, who have won two in a row. Andrei Kuzmenko opened the scoring in his Calgary debut, while Noah Hanifin and Connor Zary also lit the lamp. Jacob Markstrom posted 21 saves.

Pavel Zacha scored and Jeremy Swayman made 25 stops for Boston, which was 8-1-3 in its previous 12 games.

Canucks 3, Hurricanes 2

J.T. Miller scored the go-ahead goal in the third period after Vancouver got two goals from Elias Lindholm, and the Canucks beat Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

Lindholm, making his Vancouver debut after he was acquired from Calgary via trade last week, had a goal in each of the first two periods to help the Canucks push their point streak to 12 games (10-0-2). Quinn Hughes and Brock Boeser had two assists apiece and Thatcher Demko made 22 saves for Vancouver.

Jordan Martinook and Sebastian Aho had goals for the Hurricanes, but the team’s three-game winning streak ended. Pyotr Kochetkov made 16 saves.

Penguins 3, Jets 0

Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped all 23 shots he faced for his league-leading sixth shutout as Pittsburgh topped visiting Winnipeg.

It was Jarry’s 19th career shutout and his second against Winnipeg. Kris Letang, Jeff Carter and Bryan Rust scored for the Penguins, who have won two in a row. The Penguins’ Mike Sullivan coached his 800th career game.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 24 saves in the Jets’ fourth straight loss (0-3-1).

Canadiens 5, Capitals 2

Nick Suzuki scored twice in a three-point outing and visiting Montreal netted three first-period goals en route to a win over slumping Washington.

Juraj Slafkovsky also scored twice and Michael Pezzetta added a goal for the Canadiens, who received a 36-save performance from Sam Montembeault. Mike Matheson collected two assists as Montreal improved to 2-0-1 in its past three games.

Alex Ovechkin and Rasmus Sandin scored for the Capitals, who are winless in five games (0-4-1). Starting goalie Charlie Lindgren was pulled after surrendering three goals on nine shots. Darcy Kuemper made 15 saves in relief. Dylan Strome notched two assists.

Devils 5, Avalanche 3

John Marino scored the tiebreaking goal with 2:17 remaining and New Jersey beat Colorado in Newark, N.J.

After blowing a 3-1 lead in the third, New Jersey regained the edge when the light-scoring Marino beat Colorado’s Justus Annunen (26 saves) for just his fourth goal of the season. Jesper Bratt had a goal and assist and Nico Hischier added two helpers for the Devils.

The Avalanche crawled out of their third-period hole thanks to goals from Cale Makar and Samuel Girard. Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon’s 14-game point streak ended Tuesday.
