Quick two-goal flurry sparks Flyers in win over Devils

flyers

Bobby Brink and Joel Farabee scored 28 seconds apart in the first period and the Philadelphia Flyers held on for a 4-2 win against the visiting New Jersey Devils on Monday night.

Scott Laughton had a goal and an assist, Garnet Hathaway also scored, Rasmus Ristolainen and Travis Konecny each had two assists and Samuel Ersson made 31 saves for the Flyers, who ended a two-game losing streak.

Dougie Hamilton and Timo Meier scored and Jake Allen made 22 saves for the Devils, who had won two in a row.

Philadelphia killed a double-minor high-sticking penalty on Ristolainen in the opening minutes and then went on its first power play at 10:58 of the first period.

Philadelphia won the faceoff to start the man advantage, and the puck went back to Ristolainen. He walked the puck into the middle before passing it back to Brink, who scored with a one-timer from above the right circle for a 1-0 lead at 11:04.

New Jersey then turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Farabee scored off a rebound in front of the crease for a 2-0 lead at 11:32.

The Flyers extended the lead to 3-0 at 2:49 of the second period after defenseman Cam York took a wrist shot from above the left circle that Hathaway tipped on the way to the net, causing the puck to flutter past Allen.

The Devils finally got one past Ersson on their 22nd shot.

Hamilton took a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle that hit the near post, banked off Ersson’s mask and caromed behind him and across the goal line to make it 3-1 at 18:47 of the second.

New Jersey pulled Allen for the extra skater late in the game and Meier scored with a one-timer from the right circle that nicked off Hathaway’s stick on the way to the net, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with 1:22 left.

Laughton sealed it with an empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining for a 4-2 lead.

The teams will meet again on Wednesday in Newark, N.J.
