Four Americans, Sloane Stephens and Taylor Townsend among them, won the first four matches of the day at the Guadalajara Open on Monday in Mexico.
Stephens won her opener against France’s Carole Monnet 6-4, 7-6 (5), while Townsend rallied past Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-2. Townsend had a quick turnaround to travel from New York to Guadalajara after she and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic won the U.S. Open women’s doubles title Friday.
Kayla Day beat Elvina Kalieva 7-6 (9), 6-4 in an all-American matchup. Day saved 12 of 14 break points, as well as two set points during the marathon first-set tiebreaker. And Caroline Dolehide defeated Mexico’s Renata Zarazua 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez needed just 59 minutes to dispatch Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus 6-1, 6-1. Two matches left Monday night featured No. 7 seed Magdalena Frech of Poland against Japan’s Nao Hibino and No. 8 seed Liudmila Samsonova of Russia against France’s Elsa Jacquemot.
