The long-rumored move of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun to Houston became official on Wednesday.

The league announced that the NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the Sun to Houston Rockets owner Tilman J. Fertitta. While the Sun will complete the nascent 2026 season at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., the team will relocate to Houston for the 2027 season.

Multiple reports declared the Mohegan Tribe received a WNBA-record $300 million for the franchise.

Houston has been without an WNBA team since the Comets folded following the 2008 season. The Comets were a charter franchise in 1997 and won the league’s first four titles thanks to big stars such as Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson.

Reports indicate Houston’s incoming team also will be named the Comets.

While the Sun have fallen on hard times in recent years — going 11-33 last season and opening this season with two losses — the team was mostly a big winner since arriving in Uncasville from Orlando, Fla., prior to the 2003 season. The Sun posted 15 winning seasons and reached the WNBA finals four times (2004, 2005, 2019, 2022).
