Oddsmakers love Redskins’ chances to sign QB Cam Newton

Oddsmakers expect Cam Newton to land with his former head coach in Washington.

DraftKings has installed the Redskins as a massive favorite to add Newton to a quarterback room that includes 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. However, the 22-year-old Haskins was selected 15th overall by a front office that included now-fired president Bruce Allen and head coach Jay Gruden.

The Redskins hired Rivera in January and, now that Newton is on the trade block, the natural conclusion is Rivera will have interest in reconnecting with the former NFL MVP.

Newton had Lisfranc surgery and played only two games in 2019. He has a salary cap figure of $21.1 million in 2020, including a base salary of $18.6 million. He signed a five-year, $103.8 million contract extension in 2015 that took effect with the 2016 season, and the Panthers could free up $19 million in cap space by releasing or trading him.

DraftKings has Washington at -125 odds to be Newton’s next stop. The next closest potential suitors are the Los Angeles Chargers at +400, ahead of Jacksonville and New England at +500.

The Chargers are currently positioned to start Tyrod Taylor but speculation has connected the franchise to the top quarterback prospects in the draft.

With Nick Foles moving on to the Chicago Bears via trade, the Jaguars are committed to 2019 sixth-rounder Gardner Minshew as their starter.

The Patriots are expected to allow 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer, in his third tour of duty with the club, to compete to replace Tom Brady.

Beyond the top three, DraftKings put Miami (+1000) and the Denver Broncos (+2000) in the running for Newton.
